With the summer winding down for all you east coasters, I figured it was time for a mix from the Sinister Coast. The place where summer never ends. (Trust me, I wake up everyday to practically the same thing. 80's & sunny.) The theme is simple: "Sperm's Cali - Forn - I - A." So, lean back, drop the top and enjoy. Oh wait, what was I thinking? Pop in the phones, squeeze on the subway, and hold on for dear life.
- Sperm

1 - "California Love" by 2Pac, Dr. Dre & Roger Troutman

"Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west… "
Used to be that when one thought of California music it was the Beach Boys or the Eagles. Nowadays vintage Cali is Dre, Pac & the boys. "Let me serenade the streets of L.A…"

2 - "Beverly Hills" by Weezer
The Weez with another super catchy tune. Proving it's okay again to rock in the hills of Beverly. It's where you want to live when you're the next big thing.

3 - "Go" by Common
The return of Common Sense. Not really a west coaster, but it's an album I've been digging all summer. This and pretty much anything with Kanye West attached…

4 - "Stacked Actors" by Foo Fighters
It rocks right out of the gate on the album better known by the mafia for containing the ED song. Gotta figure Grohl was in knee deep in LA when he wrote this ditty.

5 - "Piazza, New York Catcher" by Belle & Sebastian
Belle & Sebastian ask the only question that remains unanswered. And beckon us to San Francisco.

6 - "Hiro's Song" by Ben Folds
When you come to the Sinister Coast and turn 51 you are obligated to leave your family for the secretary.

7 - "Screenwriter's Blues" by Soul Coughing
I now completely understand screenwriter's blues. Kind of.

8 - "Overnight Celebrity" by Twista
Another from Camp Kanye. How could I put together a LA mix without some club music? It's a 'how to' guide for getting laid once you are famous. Many, many ladies once fell prey to Alan Thicke's version of this.

9 - "She's A Beauty" by The Tubes
A touch of the 80's. For everyone who grew up thinking LA was the place to grow up.

10 - "Angeles" by Elliot Smith
Lament LA along with Elliot.

11 - "The Devil's Song" by Marcy Playground
A cool, cool ass song. With the understanding the devil spends much of his time commuting between NYC & LA, I'm telling you he's doing a better job here.

12 - "Used to Love U" by John Legend
The third and final Kanye connection. I love JL's brand of R&B and Hip Hop. Listen if you have not. Is this how I feel about NYC? Ummm…no. No 'used to' about it.

13 - "Celluloid Heroes" by The Kinks
A sad tale of Hollywood dreams. With a line that perfectly describes its residents. "Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star. And everybody's in show biz, it doesn't matter who you are."

14 - "Camera One" by Josh Joplin
More tales from Hollywood. It's a little poppy, but it's also catchy. Why not. You need the pop to sing along to when you're stuck on the 405.

15 - "La Cienega Just Smiled" by Ryan Adams
Forgot how much I like this album. He writes tunes about LA & NY. Maybe Ryan Adams is the devil.

16 - "A Long December" by Counting Crows
My sales pitch: "If you think you might come to California…I think you should."

17 - "Going Back to Cali" by LL Cool J
If Bright Lights Big City brought 'em to NY, Less Than Zero brought 'em to LA. All parties out here have unexplained stacks of TVs & Robert Downey Jr.

18 - "California Songs" by Local H
Stumbled across this on ITunes. Not only did it inspire me to make this mix, it's the perfect song to end with. (Now, come out to the coast…we'll get together…have a few laughs…)
