Ithacamafia Mixtape: vol. 9.
A double-barrel blast of mixmaking has arrived on your doorsteps, kids. Over the last number of months cd's and albums and songs have piled up on my desk and hard drive, unlistened, unlooked, unloved. You see, I get an inundation of free goods from Hyrdo and the "Late Show" train, coupled with Little D's indie gifts and my own cheap-as-free blog downloads. That's a lot of music. Over the summer I started work on "Summer Jamz '06", but got too caught up in the Covers mix to follow thru. So, I went back, took a few songs I had layin' around, and mixed them with a large helping of new stuff that I've gotten recently. What you have, then, are two companion mixes -- Mixtapes #9 & #10. They go together like Hall & Oates. Enjoy.

1. - "Intro/Hello Young Lovers" by Nancy Sinatra
This little gem I got from a Las Vegas boxed set. It's pretty fantastic. Well, good ol' Nancy still has her pipes, and when I first heard it, her patter in the beginning brought a smile to my face, and I knew it would lead off the next mix I made. So smile, young lovers.
2. - "With You" by The Subways
Little D gave me this sweet little album from The Subways. This track popped on my iPod while listening to her additions on shuffle, and it's been in my head ever since. On first glance, it's just a rockin' hard-edged jaunt. But, they do more with it than just blow your earholes -- and I appreciate that. It definitely makes me do the "air guitar strum" while walking to the subway.
3. - "C'mere" by Interpol
Not a new song, but I often find myself in moods where I can't get enough Interpol. They're definitely one of my "nighttime bands" -- one of those albums that I like to put on when I'm working in the eve, a low light on, and I'm plugging away doing some designing on the computer. It was probably endgraved in my head when I used their first album for the "Wee Hours 'Ed' Script Drops". Anyways, I like this song. Go figure.
4. - "Nth Degree" by Morningwood
This ditty is on the mix for Mr. David Letterman. For a few months, Hydro would ask me what the song that Dave is always playing in his dressing room before the show is. Unfortunately, the only description she could give was "It's a female singer." Somehow, I couldn't figure it out. But, this happened to be in a car commercial too, so I was able to do some detective work and figure it out. So, now you know -- this is the song Dave uses on his "get pumped up for the show" mix. We guess. Some harmlessly fun sugar-coated pop.
5. - "Mahna Mahna Digger" by Kanye West & The Muppets (DJ: Lenlow)
This is my mashup entry for the evening. I fucking dare you not to bop your head to this song. And, I predict that over 50% of you will be singing Mahna Mahna to yourselves before the day is over. Fantastic mix.6. - "Sundress" by Ben Kweller
This is off Ben's new ablum (self titled, "Ben Kweller"), and I'm really enjoying it. It was one of those late summer songs that I wanted to include on the "Summer Jamz '06" mix but never got to it. So now, you can enjoy it in the fall -- and it's just as good.
7. - "France" by Ryan Adams
I picked this up somewhere on the internets. It's a new track from recent sessions (does the man have a new recording session for an album like every week!?!?) on a new album. Judging from the sound, it's going to be a follow-up in the vein of "Rock N Roll" -- which critics panned, but I freaking freaking dug. A good rocker from Ryan.
8. - "Summersong" by The Decemberists
A new track by Fops Faves, I managed to pluck this from the internets as well back in July. At that time, October (their new album's release date) seemed ages away, and I would get to surprise Frants with this gem on my "SJ'06" mix -- AND it was called Summersong. *sigh* Whateves, it's still great.
9. - "Ceremony" by New Order
I've been on a bit of a New Order kick lately, and this one shiiiiiiines. Plus, to lend my pic that much more indie cred, I saw last night that Ms. Coppola is using it in the trailer for her new flick, "Marie Antoinette". So there.
10. - "The Pink Life" by Mike Doughty
I'm fashioning a Doughty Mix at the moment, and I couldn't resist putting this track up on the mix. I'll be catching Mr. D and his band when they come through town w/ BNL in November. It's one of my favorite tracks off of "Skittish". And so, it's here for you to enjoy.
11. - "Warm Love" by Van Morrison
Thanks to Matty, I've been on a Van kick lately, too. This one caught my ear for putting a smile on my face. I'd say the best way to describe it is if I could take a hug, turn it into a song, this would be it. So, here you go -- a hug from Van.
12. - "Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)" by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Here's a track from one of Hydro's current favs. These guys know how to write an enjoyable song (and did a great job when they were on Letterman). One of our most-played albums of the spring and summer, it was meant to be shared earlier, but still is good for you now.
13. - "Wolf Like Me" by TV on the Radio
I was a big fan of TVotR's first album (and EP), and I'm just as big a fan of there newest entry. I believe the last track you heard from them was "Staring at the Sun" -- but this one is much more rocking. They also recently played this on the Late Show, and they kicked it's ass. Great job.
14. - "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap
This song was used for the closing montage of the "Heroes" pilot. Love the song, love the show. Save the Cheerleader, Save the World.
15. - "Insistor" by Tapes n' Tapes
One of Lil' D's favorites from the spring, she was all about suggesting Tapes N' Tapes to the Late Show when they came on back in June. This is one of my personal fav's from their ablum. It makes me feel like I'm being chased by someone. Tapes, along with Aziz Ansari (one of the funniest fucking guys around right now) made a great short, "Clell Tickel: Indie Marketing Guru".
16. - "Gold Mine Gutted" by Bright Eyes
Matty's really turned me onto Bright Eyes. The first album of his that I picked up a while back was somewhat hit or miss for me, but after some gifts from Ire I was converted. The man's a great songwriter. This is a little low-key gem to sit back and let wash over you.
17. - "Brooklyn Stars" by Matt Pond PA
A Little D. pick, Matt Pond PA is a pretty fantastic band. And that's not just the PA-part of me talkin'. Brooklyn Stars is an exceptional track from their album, "Several Arrows Later".
18. - "The Greatest" by Cat Power
I remember wayyyyy back in Queens, Duck mentioning he heard Cat Power in a store -- and he thought that she was pretty fantastic. After listening to the album, he wasn't so sure, it was a little hit-or-miss for him, if I remember correctly (and, I might be wrong. Or drunk.). She's got some pipes and a half, but she has this problem where she gets a little... awkward... when you see her perform live. Thankfully, this is not one of those times. Since it's on tape.
19. - "Sonnet" by The Verve
Love the song. It don't sound like a sonnet. My love. My love.
20. - "The Train" by OutKast
A song from "the lesser of the OutKast members", according to Bob -- I think it's a perfect example of what Big Boi does best. An undeniable beat and groove that just gives you a feeling of being... lifted... His smooth delivery melds perfectly with the hooks and the chorus behind him. Like a ray of sunshine on a crisp morning, this one always puts an extra bounce in my bungie. Thank you, Rooster.
